Show Notes

[1:30] Meet Reveal Product Owner Scott Hettinger

  • Hettinger joined Grayshift after a 14-year career with the Carolina Beach Police Department in North Caroline
  • Hettinger spent his career rising through the ranks from a police officer to an investigator, to a digital forensics examiner and supervisor, to Lieutenant
  • After joining Grayshift, Hettinger was immediately asked to aid in the process of creation for Reveal and assist in its development

[2:32] Podcast host Debbie Garner asks Hettinger for a basic overview of what Reveal is and what it does for law enforcement

  • Hettinger explains to listeners that Reveal is a cloud native digital forensics analysis tool that provides law enforcement investigators and examiners with the ability to analyze data rapidly as it is being extracted from mobile devices
  • Braden Thomas joins the discussion with Hettinger to discuss how the Grayshift team determined Reveal was a solution to a need among law enforcement and the problems it’s designed to solve

[8:48] Thomas explains the first steps in developing a digital forensics analysis tool like Reveal

  • In addition to customer visits, Thomas takes listeners through the architect first approach the team took while developing Reveal, the questions they asked, and how it differed from the development of GrayKey
  • Thomas introduces listeners to the team that was assembled to develop Reveal, discusses their qualifications and expertise, and where they came from and how they worked together to build Reveal

[13:13] Hettinger dives deeper into Reveal and the problem-solving capabilities it brings to the table

  • Hettinger discusses the value of the cloud and cloud-based tools like Reveal when it comes to processing, storing, and analyzing data
  • Hettinger tells listeners all they need is a browser, a login, and internet access to use Reveal and how easy it is compared to using physical solutions to transfer and share media with other officers to collaborate on a case
  • Hettinger shares the joy of automatic updates vs. waiting months and months when you’re dealing with physical storage instead of the cloud

[14:58] Hettinger calls out three of the biggest benefits of using Reveal: savings, collaboration, and speed

  • Using the cloud vs. on-premises solutions helps law enforcement agencies save money by only paying for what they need as they need it
  • Collaboration is easier between agencies because the cloud removes geographical boundaries and the need to do things like ship USB drives through the mail; with Reveal, all you have to do is share a link
  • Hettinger informs listeners that you don’t have to wait to process data; with Reveal you can start processing data as soon as it’s extracted and often experience TTFF in 5 minutes or less

[22:16] Garner asks Cleveland and Hettinger about their time as active law enforcement and how Reveal would have fit into their workflow and benefited their respective agencies

  • Hettinger reflects on how Reveal would have helped him during his time as an investigator and as a digital forensics examiner because every second matters when working a case
  • Cleveland agrees with Hettinger and provides a case example he worked back in 2015 where a digital forensics analysis tool like Reveal would’ve helped things move more quickly

[22:16] Garner asks Hettinger to talk to us about the Reveal beta program and what he learned that influenced the development of the tool

  • Hettinger shares that the beta program for Reveal included investigators, examiners, and analysts using the tool and providing feedback about how they would like to use it in everyday jobs and how they would like to see data presented
  • Hettinger applauds the features that beta testers thought of that helped Grayshift develop an easy-to-use platform for all job roles

[29:02] Garner asks Thomas what challenges Grayshift will work on resolving next for current and future customers

  • Thomas talks about how rapidly Grayshift likes to iterate on its technology for customers and the company’s beta and main release cycles
  • Thomas also talks about how Reveal Early Access is only the beginning as new features and improvements will be coming to the product regularly
  • Hinting at the future, Thomas teases finding solutions to silos and helping make sure mobile forensic data is integrated into wider workflows for Grayshift customers

[33:59] Thomas and Hettinger close out the episode discussing what release of Reveal means to them

  • Thomas says Reveal is what makes GrayKey whole, and it means that for the first time we have a closed feedback loop between when a customer attaches a mobile device to their GrayKey and analyzes the extracted data, which enables us to better serve our customers and assist them with faster case processing and resolution
  • Hettinger says Reveal is all about accuracy and security of data, and for him, it was a relief to see developers taking the time to ask law enforcement questions to ensure they develop products that benefit them as much as possible
