Digital Forensic Specialist Team




David Smalley is the worldwide lead for the Grayshift Digital Forensic Specialist team. His team focuses on providing technical insight and support for customers throughout their entire engagement, representing Grayshift as subject-matter experts in the field of digital forensics. As lead for the Grayshift Digital Forensics team, David’s goal is to address customer needs in the ever-changing technical landscape by providing instruction to law enforcement and technical support staff. His responsibilities in this role include developing new training material aligned with the latest technology and working with product, marketing, and sales teams to ensure flawless execution. David brings to his position a well-established background in forensic technology and consulting. Prior to taking a role at Grayshift, he managed a team of forensic examiners and analysts at a leading worldwide electronic discovery organization and served for over a decade in law enforcement as a Digital Forensic Examiner and court qualified subject-matter expert.




Josh Carder is the Manager for the DFS team in the Americas at Grayshift and a subject matter expert in Mobile Forensics. Before joining Grayshift, Josh was the Lab Director for a State Police agency focusing on the Internet Crimes Against Children mission. Josh has spent close to 20 years as a forensics examiner in Federal, State and Department of Defense laboratories around the world. His missions included both criminal and counter-terrorism units, specializing in advanced mobile device forensics.




Stephen Coates is the Manager for the International DFS at Grayshift and a subject matter expert in Mobile Forensics. Before joining Grayshift, Stephen’s background for the last 32 years was in Law Enforcement, serving with the Royal Military Police, Royal Ulster Constabulary GC, and the Police Service of Northern Ireland. During that time since 2005, he has been a Digital Forensics practitioner, starting with Computer Forensics and then specialising in the extraction and analysis of mobile devices, assisting investigations involving serious crime and terrorism. During that time Stephen was also an associate trainer/instructor for Mobile Digital Forensics at the UK College of Policing, and was also responsible for delivering all Mobile Device training within the Police Service of Northern Ireland since 2009.




Gary Coulthart is a Digital Forensic Specialist at Grayshift with extensive history and expertise in digital forensics and cell site analysis. Before joining Grayshift, Gary held various positions within the New South Wales Police Force and operated as a technical trainer in mobile device collection and analysis for law enforcement globally.




Laurent Simon is a Digital Forensic Specialist at Grayshift and subject matter expert in Mobile Device Forensics. Prior to joining Grayshift, Laurent served in National Gendarmerie for over 26 years, with 10 years spent as a digital forensic examiner within the Departmental Brigade of Intelligence and Judicial Investigations of Jura Gendarmerie. He is a graduate of Troyes University and earned a Bachelor of Science in Forensic Computing and Cybercrime Investigations.




Matthew Fullerton is a Digital Forensic Specialist at Grayshift and a subject matter expert in Mobile Device Forensics. Before joining Grayshift, Matthew served in Law Enforcement for 13.5 years, both as a Police Officer and Police Detective. Most recently, Matthew retired from a suburban Police Department in the Denver metro area, where he was a Police Detective and Mobile Device Examiner. Matthew possesses several certifications and is a court-qualified expert witness in Digital Forensics.




Kazuhito Goto is a Digital Forensic Specialist at Grayshift and a subject matter expert in Mobile Device Forensics. Before joining Grayshift, Kazuhito spent 14 years working in information security. For the last 4 years, as a leader of the cyber threat intelligence team for both deep and dark web and open-source intelligence. Kas has worked with clients in government and flagship companies in Japan.




Kevin Chandler is a Digital Forensic Specialist at Grayshift with over 26 years in Law Enforcement, specialising in digital forensics and cell site analysis. Prior to joining Grayshift, Kevin worked for the British Transport Police, in various policing roles, the last 16 years were as a Detective specialising in fraud and digital investigations.




Jay Varda is a Digital Forensic Specialist at Grayshift and subject matter expert in Mobile Device Forensics. Prior to joining Grayshift, Jay served in federal Law Enforcement for over 29 years, with over half of those years spent as a Computer Forensics Agent within Homeland Security Investigations. Jay possesses several certifications and is a court qualified expert witness in Digital Forensics.




Jason Miranda is a Digital Forensic Specialist and a subject matter expert in Mobile Device Forensics. Prior to joining Grayshift, Jason served in law enforcement for just over 14 years, most recently with a State Agency investigating Internet Crimes Against Children. Jason possesses several computer and mobile forensic certifications and has been qualified as an expert witness in Digital Forensics. Jason is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned a Master of Science in Digital Forensic Science from Champlain College.
